At around 9:15am on Monday, August 17th, 1998, Susan Slater (and husband) walked into the emergency room at Stanford Hospital and followed the orderly to Labor and Delivery at the Packard Children's Hospital ("we'll just follow you; that woman's much further along than I am") even though her contractions weren't quite long enough or quite frequent enough, because it had been over eight hours since her water broke. Upon inspection, it was discovered that she was completely effaced and completely dilated...and that the baby's feet were dangling down where his head was supposed to be. ("It wasn't that way last week.")
A quick C-section later, and at 10:01am Pacific Time,
said hello to his parents. He weighed
five pounds, eleven ounces and change and was eighteen inches long. The baby is wonderful (and beautiful), the mother is fine (if a bit sore), and the father is ecstatic (and trying to figure out if he really can do without sleep).
